Lawn Topdressing
We spread a thin, even layer of leveling material over the lawn to fill shallow low spots. The grass grows up through it, and the mower rides smoother.

Most Sarasota lawns grow on fine sand. The federal soil survey puts much of the city on EauGallie and Myakka fine sands, two poorly drained flatwoods soils. Sand under a lawn settles over time, and low spots open up where it sinks. Then the mower bounces across the yard, and puddles sit in the dips after a summer storm.
Sarasota is part of our service area, which reaches about 60 miles around Bradenton. Lawn Leveling Masters starts every lawn leveling job with a low cut and spray paint on each low spot. We fill and tamp each dip, then rake the material in so the grass crowns can grow through. Call or text (941) 812-6030, and we look at the lawn and put the quote in writing.

Many Sarasota yards are old. The median home in the city was built in 1976, by Census survey figures. About 58 percent of the city's homes went up before 1980.
An older yard carries the marks of every project on the lot. Trench lines sink where a pipe went in, and stump holes settle as the buried wood rots. Surface roots from big shade trees lift the turf into ridges, and parked cars press ruts into it.
New construction brings its own marks. The Census Bureau's permit survey counts 168 new single-family homes permitted in the city in 2025. Fill around a new foundation can settle, and construction traffic leaves ruts behind.
Leveling fills the low ground around tree roots. Cutting a root is a question for a certified arborist. The City of Sarasota protects its largest live oaks as grand trees. A few sunken spots call for spot lawn repair, while a lawn that rolls end to end needs full leveling.
The soils under the city are poorly drained, and the water table rises close to the surface for months. Federal soil data for EauGallie and Myakka sands puts the water table about a foot down from June through November. By April and May, it sits about four feet down.
Rain follows the same calendar. Federal climate normals for the Sarasota Bradenton airport show about 49 inches of rain a year. About 60 percent of it falls from June through September. Wet sand is soft, so summer mowers and cars can leave ruts in it.
Heavy rain can also wash loose sand off high spots and into low ones. Florida's extension service says topdressing soil should be similar to the soil under the turf. Under most Sarasota lawns, that soil is fine sand. Our page on lawn topdressing explains how the layer goes on.
Some wet ground is more than a dip. The City of Sarasota says a sizable amount of its land lies in a floodplain. Its Development Services department answers flood zone questions for city addresses.
Hurricane Milton came ashore near Siesta Key in Sarasota County on the night of October 9, 2024. The National Hurricane Center rated it a Category 3 storm at landfall.
Storm cleanup leaves its own marks on a lawn. Heavy trucks cut ruts into soft ground, and a fallen tree can leave a hole where its roots tore out. The state's extension service says to clear storm debris off turf quickly, so sunlight can reach the grass.
Our yard cleanup work clears leaves and small debris off the grass. Then we fill each rut and hole and tamp it firm, so it sits even with the lawn. Downed trees go to a tree service, and bare patches may need sod from a sod or lawn company.
Downtown Sarasota sits about 12 miles south of Bradenton on the Tamiami Trail. Our service area covers the whole city, including Laurel Park, Alta Vista, Lido Key and Bird Key. It also covers the Sarasota addresses outside the city limits, east toward I-75 and south past Clark Road.
St. Augustine grass is the most common lawn grass in Florida, says the state's extension service. The same guidance puts standard varieties at a mowing height of 3.5 to 4 inches. A level lawn holds that height across the yard. On a bumpy one, the mower scalps the high spots.
Sarasota County's lawn tips say to mow high and leave the clippings on the lawn. City code keeps yard clippings out of the stormwater system, so blown clippings go back onto the grass. A recurring lawn maintenance plan keeps the cuts on schedule once the lawn is level.
