What is lawn leveling?
Lawn leveling fills the dips and low spots that make a lawn bumpy, so the lawn mows flat. Leveling material is spread into each low spot and tamped firm, and a rake works it in. The grass then grows up through the new material.
Why is my lawn so bumpy?
Most bumps start under the grass, in soil that settles or washes out. Much of the ground around Bradenton is sandy flatwoods soil, and heavy summer rain can wash it out in spots. Soil also sinks over old trenches for pipes and cables, and fill soil can settle around newer homes. Tree roots push the turf up, and tires leave ruts in soft, wet ground.
When is the best time to level a lawn in Florida?
Leveling works best while the grass is growing, so it can grow up through the new material. Around Bradenton, spring is a good window, since the water table sits lowest in April and May. In the rainy season, from late May into October, the ground stays wetter and low spots can hold water. St. Augustine grass, the most common lawn grass in Florida, slows down in winter.
What do you fill the low spots with?
We fill them with leveling material, raked in so the grass can grow up through it. Florida's extension service says topdressing soil should be similar to the soil under the lawn. It should also carry no weed seeds or nematodes. Our lawn topdressing page covers the material question in more depth.
What will my lawn look like after leveling?
Right after the job, the lawn is cut short and the filled spots show the new material. In the growing season, the grass grows up through it and the lawn greens back over. Then the mower rides across the lawn level. A bare patch with no grass left may need sod or seed afterward, which is work for a sod company.
What is the difference between yard leveling and grading?
Yard leveling smooths out the bumps and fills the low spots in the lawn surface. Grading changes the slope of the whole yard, and that is a job for another contractor. A yard that holds standing water or slopes toward the house needs a drainage or grading contractor first.
What does lawn leveling cost?
We look at the lawn and put the quote in writing before any work starts. For leveling, the price comes down to the size of the lawn and how many low spots it has. How deep they run and how much material they take count too. For mowing and lawn maintenance, the lawn size and how often we come set the price.
Do you mow and maintain lawns too?
Yes. We do one-time cuts and recurring lawn maintenance visits, weekly or every other week as the season needs. Each visit covers mowing, edging, trimming and blowing off the walks and drive. Fertilizing and weed control are work for a certified applicator, and we leave those to that trade.
What area do you serve?
We work about 60 miles around Bradenton, which sits at the center of our service area. That covers Sarasota, Venice, North Port and Lakewood Ranch to the south and east. To the north it takes in Palmetto, Apollo Beach, Sun City Center, Riverview, Brandon and St. Petersburg. Every town is listed on our service areas page.
