Lawn topdressing spreads a thin, even layer of leveling material over your grass. It fills the shallow dips and low spots that make a mower bounce all over the place. The grass grows up through the layer, and the surface comes out smoother. We topdress home lawns across the area, about 60 miles around Bradenton.
Each job starts with a low mow, so every dip shows and the material can settle into the turf. We spread the leveling material, then tamp the low spots firm. Rakes or drag mats work the layer down until the grass blades show. Topdressing runs on the same steps as lawn leveling in Bradenton.

Florida's extension service describes topdressing as a uniform layer of soil spread on top of the grass. Its rule for the material is to match the soil already under your lawn. The material should also carry no weed seeds or nematodes, the tiny worms that feed on grass roots.
The federal soil survey for Manatee County maps mostly fine sands. EauGallie and Myakka lead the list, and Myakka fine sand is Florida's state soil. On that ground, the matching material is usually sand or a sandy mix.
The same extension guidance calls sand topdressing the best biological control for thatch. Thatch is the layer of stems and roots that builds up at the soil line.
Keep it thin. For a regular topdressing against thatch, Florida's extension service gives a figure of about a quarter inch of soil. It also warns against going past the recommended rates.
A thin layer works with the way St. Augustine grass grows. It spreads on stolons, the runners that creep along the top of the soil. The extension service notes that the joints on those runners grow new shoots and roots. Under a thin layer, they root into the new material and grow up through it.
Piling material on causes trouble. The extension service warns that too much soil or organic matter encourages large patch. That fungus disease hits St. Augustine and Zoysia lawns hardest. A hole or rut too deep for a thin layer is a spot fix for our lawn repair work.
Topdress while the grass is growing fast. Florida's extension service says warm-season grass grows quickest in spring and summer. Floratam, the most widely used St. Augustine grass in Florida, grows vigorously through those months. After the job, a lawn maintenance plan keeps up with that growth.
Around Bradenton, the soil survey lists the water table depth by month for EauGallie fine sand, a leading local soil. It sits about 4 feet down in April and May. In the rainy season it climbs to about 6 inches below the surface, from July through October. Spring ground is the driest of the year, and summer low spots can stay soggy.
Large patch also sets the calendar. It shows up most when temperatures drop below 80 degrees, usually between November and May. Those cool months are the wrong time for a heavy layer.

We put the quote in writing, with the work spelled out. Once you say yes, we set the day for the job.
On a leveling job, we mow low, then mark and fill every low spot. On a mowing visit, we mow and edge the lawn and trim around the beds.
The fill is tamped firm and raked in, and the lawn is left flat for the mower. Every mowing visit ends with the walks and the drive blown clean.
