Lawn Topdressing
We spread a thin, even layer of leveling material over the lawn to fill shallow low spots. The grass grows up through it, and the mower rides smoother.

When a lawn bounces the mower all over the place, the cause is usually under the grass. In Apollo Beach, some lots near the bay sit on dredged fill, a mix of sand and shell. Inland yards sit on sandy flatwoods soil with a high water table in the rainy season. Both kinds of ground can settle or rut, and the lawn turns bumpy.
Apollo Beach sits on Tampa Bay between Gibsonton and Ruskin, about 25 miles north of Bradenton up US-41. It is part of the Lawn Leveling Masters service area. Our lawn leveling service fills the dips and holes on canal lots and newer subdivision yards alike. Call or text (941) 812-6030, and we look at the lawn and put the quote in writing.

The federal soil survey maps parts of the bayfront, such as Andalucia and Symphony Isles, as fill soil. The NRCS describes it as sand and shell that was dredged up and spread as a layer. Fill can settle in spots as it ages, and the lawn on top dips with it.
More than half of Apollo Beach's land is Myakka or Wabasso fine sand, the soil survey shows. Myakka is Florida's state soil, and the NRCS calls both poorly drained. In most years, the Myakka water table sits within 18 inches of the surface for one to four months. Soft, wet ground takes ruts from tires and feet, and the ruts stay once it dries.
Hurricane Helene raised the water 5 to 8 feet above the average high tide on the Hillsborough County shore. The National Weather Service measured those levels in September 2024. When water moves across a lawn, it can wash sand out of one spot and drop it in another. Lawn repair fills those holes and washouts one spot at a time.
The county's Apollo Beach Community Plan places the older neighborhoods west of US-41. They are mostly tract homes on both sides of Apollo Beach Boulevard, the main road to the bay. The plan also makes keeping up the canal system a community goal. It calls for stormwater controls that keep silt from new development out of the canals.
Hillsborough County's fertilizer rule also covers grass clippings. Clippings may not be blown or washed into canals, storm drains, ditches or streets. On our lawn mowing visits, we blow the clippings back onto the lawn.
Apollo Beach has grown fast. The Census counted 14,055 people in 2010 and 26,002 in 2020, inside the same boundary. Census survey data show about half of the homes were built in 2010 or later. More than 8 in 10 homes are detached single-family houses.
In 2005, the county's community plan described the land east of US-41 as large parcels, most of them farmed. Newer subdivisions such as Waterset stand there now, on Myakka fine sand. New lawns can sink in their first few years, along utility trenches and next to the house. Lawn topdressing smooths a lawn like that with a thin layer the grass grows through.
If your subdivision has a homeowners association, check its lawn rules before a big job. Once the lawn is level, recurring lawn maintenance keeps it cut weekly or every other week as the season needs.
Apollo Beach is unincorporated, so Hillsborough County and the regional water district set the local lawn rules. The Southwest Florida Water Management District's current order allows one lawn watering day a week in Hillsborough County. The order runs through March 31, 2027. Check the county's schedule for your day.
A leveled lawn needs water while the grass grows up through the new material. The National Weather Service puts the rainy season here from late May into October. Ask about timing when you call, so the job lines up with your watering day and the rain.
Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, the National Hurricane Center says. After a storm, our yard cleanup can clear leaves and small debris off the lawn before any leveling starts.
