Lawn Topdressing
We spread a thin, even layer of leveling material over the lawn to fill shallow low spots. The grass grows up through it, and the mower rides smoother.

A Lakewood Ranch lawn can look smooth from the street and still bounce the mower across the yard. The dips and low spots hide under the grass until the mower finds them. Most homes here are young: about two in three went up in 2010 or later, Census figures show.
Lawn Leveling Masters handles lawn leveling and lawn mowing for homeowners, and Lakewood Ranch is part of our service area. Our lawn leveling process starts with a low cut and a paint mark on every dip. Then leveling material fills each dip, and we tamp it firm. Call or text (941) 812-6030, and we look at the lawn and put the quote in writing.

Lakewood Ranch is a master-planned community of more than 35,000 acres, by its developer's count. The 2020 Census counted 34,877 people there, and a later Census survey puts it near 44,000. Half its homes date to 2014 or later, and most are detached single-family houses.
Florida's extension service notes that home building disturbs a lot's soil and often packs it down under vehicle traffic. Another extension service warns that sunken trenches from utility work can be a hazard when you mow. A single sunken trench or hole is a job for lawn repair for holes and ruts. A lawn that is bumpy end to end gets leveled across the whole yard.
Lakewood Ranch runs along the east side of I-75 from SR 64 south to Fruitville Road. Four interchanges sit on its western edge, and the Braden River crosses the community. Bradenton sits at the center of our service area, about 15 road miles from the Main Street area.
Its developer counts more than 40 villages, each with 250 to 1,500 homes. Summerfield, Greenbrook, Country Club East and Waterside are a few of the names. The community spans the Manatee and Sarasota county line. It is unincorporated, so each county governs its own side.
About half of those villages are still selling new homes, the developer says. That puts new construction a short drive from homes built in the 1990s. On any of those lots, lawn topdressing spreads a thin, even layer over the whole lawn to smooth the surface.
Federal soil survey maps show about six in ten acres of Lakewood Ranch as Myakka or EauGallie fine sands. Both are sandy flatwoods soils, mapped at 0 to 2 percent slopes. Myakka fine sand is Florida's official state soil.
St. Augustine grass is the most common lawn grass in Florida, the state's extension service says. Floratam is its most widely used type. The grass spreads by stolons, stems that run along the ground.
For topdressing, that guidance calls for soil similar to the soil under the turf. Here, that native soil is mostly fine sand. We rake the leveling material so the grass crowns stay exposed and the lawn grows through.
Lakes and stormwater ponds sit throughout the villages, and a special district looks after how they work. Federal climate normals for a station east of Bradenton show about 56 inches of rain a year. About 63 percent of it falls from June through September. The sandy surface takes that rain in fast, over a high water table in the rainy season.
Lawn leveling fixes bumps and low spots in the lawn surface. A yard that holds standing water or slopes toward the house needs a drainage or grading contractor.
On the Manatee County side, the county asks owners not to dump anything into drainage ditches or streams. On the Sarasota County side, the county's advice is to leave grass clippings on the lawn. Our lawn mowing visits blow clippings off the drive and walks, back onto the grass. A cut on a weekly or every-other-week schedule is our recurring lawn maintenance.
